Introduction

Hello, I am Stephanie Willems, designer of Stephastique.

What did you study ?

In 2018 I received my Bachelor of Arts by graduating from Academie Artemis. Academie Artemis is an academy for styling, focused on interior, fashion, media, food and retail. After graduating I took on an internship with fashion designer and seamstress Mirte Engelhard, where I learned about developing patterns and the craft of sewing.  At the moment I am studying at the Modevakschool.

What are your interests and hobbies?

My interests are fashion, sustainability, art, music, movies and nature and my hobby is being creative.

What inspires you our who inspires you ?

I get inspired by my motivation to take positive action in the fashion industry. I also get inspiration from unique individuals, such as David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Mathilde Willink. Style icons with interesting personalities in general that wear whatever they like and look cool as hell wearing it.

What is your brand / Company all about?

Stephastique is a brand that produces funky handmade and custom made clothing. Each piece is made with love and ethically produced in the Netherlands. Stephastique leads by example. Dedicated to taking positive action in the fashion industry. We only use sustainable garments, such as upcycled second-hand clothing and GOTS certified fabric. Every day we are working on finding the most sustainable solutions for our designs.

Are there new things coming up so yes what ? spill the tea?

At the moment I am working on a collaboration with Points Made. It’s going to be a very colorful and bold collection made with up-and-recycled materials. Also I am preparing a new collection to sell on my webshop. So a lot of exciting new things are coming up.

We celebrate individuality and uniqueness with colorful and bold clothing that is inspired by an eclectic mix of different alternative styles and time periods. Most of all, we want you to be yourself, be unique, because there is only one of you.

What defines you?

My work is often described as colorful and sometimes alternative. I find it important to make statements with my collections. I believe that there is something unique and beautiful about every person. When asked to design a custom piece I want to give people the confidence to be themselves and to make them see their own beauty.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years

In the future I see myself having a successful, sustainable fashion business and being a teacher in fashion.

How do you think of more diversity in the fashion world?

Diversity in the fashion world is really important because every individual has something unique and beautiful. It’s important to make the fashion world as diverse as possible because everybody is meaningful.

What does ‘diversity’ mean to you?

Diversity is important to me because we all have something unique which makes us special and that is very inspiring. I think everybody should feel represented in the fashion world.

what do people don’t know about you yet ?

I think a lot of people don’t know that I used to get bullied at school for having red hair, even though it wasn’t even that red. I also dyed my hair for the first time in high school. I haven’t had my natural hair color in quite some time, but I am thinking of getting my natural color back.

Are there things that need to be changed in the fashion world if so what is it?

The fashion world could use a lot of change I think. Fast fashion should no longer exist in my opinion. Clothes should be made in a sustainable way, to last a long time and to be timeless. The people who manufacture the clothing deserve more recognition. Often times people have absolutely no idea how much time and effort goes into making a garment.

We are at the last question, what did you think about this interview and do you have any tips for our readers?!

I think the interview was very interesting. As a tip for the readers I would say: check out the DFW fashion show. It is a great collaboration of creative brands and diverse models, it is really worth the watch.

The collection Last night  is inspired by various scary movies such as American Psycho. I have always been interested in what's going on inside the head of a killer, especially psychopaths. I always felt sorry for them, it must be very difficult living a life lacking the ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships.

For the collection I recycled various materials such as bed sheets, horse blankets and second hand clothing. The whole process was all about experimenting and resulted in outfits that look as if they had been worn by quite an eccentric killer.

Shooting this collection was my first time working with a legit camera and the model is my boyfriend. He went through a really rough time at that moment in his life and dealt with depression and anxiety. I think the expression on his face and his 'poses' really added another dimension to the photo's and made them feel more vulnerable.
